We took the train to Milan and rented a car and bravely struck out to Bergamo and points along the mountain range. Thanks to JR for doing all the driving while yours truly navigated and Kit and Jeri picked up the tab.
Bergamo - lovely mountain town with an upper (alto) and lower (basso) section connected by winding/switchback streets of varying widths. Also includes a Funicular if you don't want to drive or walk up/down. Their public transport was also very good.
"Hey, I know, since we're driving west to Ivrea let's stop at Lake Como. It will be a prettier drive than going back through Milan" Truer words were never spoken. Also true is that we forgot it was Liberation Day and since it was 15 degrees warmer than average, everyone and their cousin Sal was having the same thought. Lovely, yes. Harrowing driving down narrow and even narrower streets in traffic, not so lovely. All shots taken from the car as getting out of said car wasn't an option. Even the mirrors had to be retracted to make room.
OK, that wasn't so easy now was it? Time to head out to the open road to our destination - Ivrea.
The concierge - Irena (E-rain-a) recommended a restaurant (Giovanni's) and made reservations for us. It was the start of something magical.
